In conjunction with the Decision ’09 event at Alvarado High School, the GT Program at Elementary North participated in the Leadership essay contest hosted by the district.
Makenzie Vaughan, a second grade student, stumbled across a website article praising the act of heroism by Alvarado Police officer Sergeant Tim Cortez.
Cortez provided Vaughan with a phone interview and from there she wrote and dedicated her essay to him. After reading her essay, Cortez contacted AEN and volunteered his time to go by the school to meet McKenzie and the entire GT Program.
Cortez provided each student with a goodie bag and a tour of his patrol car.
