Principal's Corner

Welcome Back

Dear AEN Family,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back for another great school year! I am very proud and excited to inform you that AEN earned the ranking of EXEMPLARY from the state based on our 2008 - 2009 TAKS scores. It is such a blessing to lead a team of educators dedicated to making every student successful. It is the goal of the faculty and staff of AEN to ensure that your child receives the very best education possible.

In order to increase parental involvement, AEN has developed a calendar of events to keep you and your family more informed of our upcoming activities. A calendar will be mailed to your home address for your convenience. There are still activities in the planning stage that did not make the publication of our calendar. You will be informed by your child's teacher(s) when those activities are finalized.

As we begin our new school year, I want to thank you in advance for your patience with us in our dismissal procedures. It usually takes a couple of weeks to develop a smooth routine. I realize that some of you may have to wait an extended period of time in the car line. This is not only hot, but costly, with the price of gasoline. I would like to remind you that we do not dismiss until 3:30. If you arrive after 3:30 to pick up your child, it will decrease your wait time. We were very efficient last year; we dismissed within 10 minutes.  Our goal is to be as efficient in our dismissal time this year.

The following procedures will continue to be implemented throughout the 2009 - 2010 school year. These procedures have proven to be very positive and have increased our ability to be proactive in preventing school violence.

• Any visitor entering the building will check in at the front office and leave his/her keys. Visitors are required to present their driver's license. This helps us document who is on the campus at any given time.

• Students in Pre-K - 3rd grade must be dropped-off in the back of the school between 7:20 and 8:00 a.m. The back doors will be open at 7:20 a.m. each morning. If a student arrives after 8:00 a.m., he/she will be considered tardy and must use the front entrance. The student must receive a tardy slip at the front office before being admitted to class.

• Unless there is an emergency, AEN will no longer allow transportation changes after 3:00 p.m. It is the parents' responsibility to make transportation arrangements and notify the student's teacher prior to 3:00 p.m. that day.

• If a student must be picked up prior to dismissal time, parents must sign him/her out before 3:15 p.m. Between 3:15 and 3:30, the office will not check students out. After 3:15 p.m., all students must be dismissed through bus, day care or outside parent pick-up line. To ensure students' safety, parents will not be permitted to wait for students in the front foyer.

• After school parent pick-up procedures require parents to wait in their vehicle with the "purple" car card displayed in the front window. Parents are not to leave their vehicle during dismissal time as the staff members will escort students to their vehicle.

• Visitation and conferences with teachers and/or staff must be made by appointment only. Having visitors coming and going all day long not only creates a safety issue but interferes with the educational process.

I encourage parents to go on-line and visit your child's teacher's web page at http://www.alvaradoisd.net/. Each teacher will post classroom events, important documents, and lesson plans agendas.

I invite you to become a member of our Parent Partnership Team. AEN needs event helpers, coordinators, and volunteers. It is only with our parents as partners that our activities can be successful and enriching for our students.

Thank you in advance for all your help in supporting AEN in educating your child/children. I am excited about the upcoming year and am looking forward to our new school year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.
